Scandinavia 2026

In August of 2026, Bruce, Ellie, Kimberlee, Laura, ET, Cheryl and myself headed to Scandinavia for two "Natural Adventure" hiking tours. We flew COS -> Minneapolis -> Amsterdam -> Aalborg. After hiking along the North Sea Coast to the northernmost point in Denmark, we flew from Aalborg to Stockholm. In Stockholm we visited the Vasa museum, and then toured a few of the islands in the archipelago.

Denmark's North Sea Coast

On this unique self-guided walking holiday, you will have the chance to explore the varied landscapes of Denmark’s North Sea coast – dunes, heathland, forests, lakes, fishing villages and pristine white sand beaches. On many of these beaches, you will find old German bunkers from World War II; a reminder of the historically strategic importance of this region as a gateway between the two seas. Starting from the popular seaside resort of Løkken, you will make your way north to Skagen – the very northern tip of Denmark, where the North Sea meets the Baltic. The coastal paths alternate with forest trails among the characteristic dune plantations which cover a large part of the region. These plantations were established to prevent sand drift but were only partly successful. Evidence of this phenomenon can still be found in such dramatic sights as the Sand-Covered Church and the mini-desert of Råbjerg Mile, with its towering inland dunes.

Sweden's Stockholm Archipelago

A seven day, self-guided adventure, hiking the Stockholm Archipelago, which is made up over over 24,000 islands. Follow easy, well-marked trails, starting in Stockholm and then island-hopping to the pine forests of Dalarö, beaches of Fjärdlång and Utö, and the nature reserve on Ornö. This is an idyllic and truly sustainable way to explore Sweden, staying in a mix of mostly small, locally-owned hotels, enjoying traditional Swedish summer festivals, and feasting on fine local food. As this walking holiday also ends in Stockholm, you have plenty of time to enjoy the capital city outside peak seasons.
